ASPS Reports Fourth Consecutive Year of Growth for Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

As novel and superior cosmetic surgery devices and techniques made their entry, the popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures has registered a steady growth in the last few years. According to the recent annual plastic surgery procedural statistics from American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 15.1 million cosmetic surgery procedures, both minimally-invasive and surgical, were performed in the United States in 2013, higher by 3 percent since 2012. This marks the fourth consecutive year of growth for cosmetic surgery procedures.

With nearly 1.7 million procedures in 2013, cosmetic surgical procedures registered a one percent increase from 2012. According to the ASPS report, the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in 2013 were:
  • Breast augmentation (290,000 procedures, up 1 percent)
  • Nose reshaping (221,000 procedures, down 9 percent)
  • Eyelid surgery (216,000 procedures, up 6 percent)
  • Liposuction (200,000 procedures, down 1 percent)
  • Facelift (133,000 procedures, up 6 percent)
In 2013, more women opted for silicone breast implants, which were used in 72 percent of all breast augmentations, the rest of the procedures (28 percent) using saline implants.

With more than 13.4 million procedures in 2013, minimally-invasive procedures increased 3 percent from 2012. The top five minimally-invasive procedures in 2013 were
  • Botulinum toxin type A or Botox injections (6.3 million injections, up 3 percent)
  • Soft tissue fillers (2.2 million procedures, up 13 percent)
  • Chemical peel (1.2 million procedures, up 3 percent)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures, down 4 percent)
  • Microdermabrasion (970,000 procedures, no change)
Botulinum toxins, such as Botox® and Dysport®, and facial fillers maintained their popularity among the cosmetic treatments, with Botox injections showing an increase of 700 percent since 2000.

Innovative products as well as the advances in technology are responsible for much of this growth in cosmetic surgery procedures. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a number of novel plastic surgery devices and products such as two form-stable silicone gel breast implants and hyaluronic acid facial filler specifically designed for treating mid-face volume loss.

With innovative devices and ideas hitting the market each year, consumers have more choices and options to rejuvenate their looks. The best way to take advantage of these options is by consulting an experienced plastic surgeon in an AAAASF-accredited plastic surgery center.

Botox Injections – Effective Option for Non-cosmetic Conditions Too

In addition to facial rejuvenation benefits, Botox injections also have medical uses.

Botox injections can rejuvenate the face by providing temporary improvement of the severe lines between the eyebrows. Plastic surgeons administer the treatment to resolve aging conditions such as crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, peri-oral lines, vertical lip lines, wrinkles, frown lines, forehead furrows, drooping brows and other early signs of aging. According to the manufacturer, 8 out of 10 women achieved significant results in clinical trials. What many people do not know is that this prescription medicine has non-cosmetic applications too and can treat certain medical conditions.

Here are some medical conditions which can be treated with Botox injections.

* Cerebral palsy (CP) affects a specific part, half, or the entire body, causing involuntary movement or muscular spasms. The injected Botox reaches the contracting muscle to help resolve the condition.

* Strabismus is the lack of co-ordination between the extra ocular muscles of eyes and affects the alignment of the eyes. Botox weakens the muscles and reduce spasms, causing muscles on the other side of the eye to contract.

* Eye twitching is repetitive, uncontrollable blinking or spasm of the upper eyelid. Botox injections reduce the contractions.

* Essential tremor is a nerve disorder which causes uncontrollable shaking of different parts of the body. The injections are found helpful to treat vocal and head tremors.

* Overactive sweat glands of the armpits are an uncomfortable condition. Botox treatment can be a remedy.

* Chronic migraines can last for 15 or more days. The FDA has approved Botox to treat this distinct and severe neurological disorder.

Botox is also used for treating increased muscle stiffness in adults in areas such as elbow, wrist, and finger muscles. It can also be effective in treating cervical dystonia characterized by abnormal head position pain and neck pain.

Whether for cosmetic or medical purposes, you should remember that Botox injections should be administered only by a trained and experienced cosmetic surgeon or physician.

Attain a Balanced Facial Contour through Genioplasty

Often, the chin goes unnoticed and becomes the culprit when it comes to a person’s facial appearance. Like any other facial feature, the chin can put the whole face out of balance if it is oversized or undersized. In such cases, genioplasty or chin augmentation surgery can make the difference. This plastic surgery procedure is performed to balance the face by enhancing or reshaping the size of the chin. This may involve inserting an implant or by restructuring the bones and their position.

How would you know if you a good candidate for chin augmentation? Well, you are if you have a weak or receding chin, but have a normal bite. The procedure can correct chin misalignment, a receding chin, or chin excess.

Cosmetic chin surgery benefits men and women in the following ways:

• Results in a well-proportioned chin that compliments other facial features
• Builds up the visual contours of jaw line
• Results in an aesthetically pleasing facial profile

In most cases, this cosmetic surgery is combined with other facial procedures such as neck lift, laser skin resurfacing, liposuction of the neck and Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to improve your looks.

Chin Surgery Options

Reshaping the chin can be done by using either chin implants or through chin surgery wherein the bone supporting the chin is repositioned). Silicone-based implants or mesh implants are typically used for the procedure. On the other hand, bony chin surgery involves reducing the size of the chin and altering its vertical position.

Genioplasty surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.  For the first few days after the surgery, you may experience slight bruising and swelling and complete recovery takes about 7- 14 days. The final shape of the chin will become fully visible after a few months of surgery when all the swelling and tissue edema has settled.

Chin surgery can make a remarkable change to a person’s looks. Choose a reliable plastic surgeon who understands your cosmetic goals and can help you achieve the results you would like to achieve.

Men Widely Opting for Liposuction Surgery

Men are turning to liposuction procedures to treat their problem areas, with a view improving their overall appearance and self-confidence.

From the time of its introduction, liposuction has increasingly gained popularity. While earlier it was mostly women who underwent the treatment, more and more men who have understood the possibilities of the treatment are utilizing it to improve their overall appearance. Plastic surgery procedures have helped men achieve six pack abs, a flat tummy, firm thighs and contoured arms.

The two areas that men complain about mostly are the chest and the back side. Male breasts are a real botheration for men. They will have to face harsh comments for that feminine appearance which affects their confidence level. About 30 percent of men have this condition called gynecomastia. Liposuction procedure removes excess fat from the breast area, restoring their manly appearance. “Pancake butt” is another aesthetic concern men have, which can be addressed via cosmetic surgery.  Liposuction can remove excess fat from other body areas to boost the volume of the buttocks through fat transfer butt augmentation procedures.

Figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) noted a 28% increase in liposuction procedures by men in 2013 compared to that of the previous year. In fact, there has been an increase in the number of men opting for cosmetic surgery procedures to enhance their job opportunities.

With advanced liposuction procedures such as laser liposuction using Smartlipo Triplex from Cynosure, the popularity of the procedure is bound to reach new heights in the near future. With the right plastic surgeon and an established plastic surgery center to undergo the treatment, men can easily achieve their cosmetic goals through safe and effective procedures.

Relevant Information about Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery or rhytidectomy is rated one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports a 6% increase in the number of facelifts performed in 2013 compared to 2012. It ranks fifth in the list of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2013. The treatment helps middle-aged people to reduce the visible signs of facial ageing such as wrinkles, lines and creases, and to rejuvenate their appearance. If you are considering a facelift, here are some important things that you should know about:
  • The first consideration is whether you are the right candidate for this plastic surgery. The right candidate is one who is in good physical and mental health. It’s also important that the person has realistic expectations and is looking for improvement and not perfection. A strong angular bone structure, minimal facial fat, and good skin elasticity are also qualities of a good candidate for a facelift. You should not be obese or an active smoker.
  • There are different types of facelifts such as skin-only lifts, dual plane lifts, composite lift, midfacial lifts, subperiosteal lifts, short scar face lift or mini face lift. The decision as to what type of facelift will be required for a person will be based on anatomical considerations. Some individuals may require more detailed procedures to achieve a satisfactory outcome, while others may need only minor corrections. In short, facelift surgery is a highly individualized procedure.
  • Another consideration is about the duration of the procedure and recovery time. Mini-facelifts would take only under 2 hours whereas other procedures may take up to 4 hours and more, especially if eyelid surgery or brow surgery is also performed in conjunction with the facelift.
  • The results are another important thing that people worry about. Most people say that, post-treatment, they look younger and refreshed. The best facelift is one that looks natural, without a subtle transformation that makes you look rested and relaxed.
You should know that injectable fillers such as Botox are not a substitute for a facelift. However, the aging face can benefit from both treatments. Choose your plastic surgeon carefully. Spend time researching the surgeon’s credentials, skills, and experience, and talk to previous patients if possible. With the right surgeon, you can be assured of optimal results – a pleasing, younger looking face!

Eyelid Surgery among Top Five Cosmetic Surgical Procedures in 2013

Last year, eyelid surgery procedures registered a 6% from 2012

TIME magazine recently reported on the latest American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics of the top cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2013. Ranked third in the chart after breast augmentation and nose reshaping, eyelid surgery had increased by 6% from 2012. The number of eyelid surgical procedures performed in 2013 stood at 216,000. In fact, eyelid surgery is seen to have retained its 2012 ranking (at third position) and popularity, as the number of procedures that year was up by 4% from 2011.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a great option for individuals looking to resolve tired or puffy eyes and loose and sagging skin or bags under eyes. Lower blepharoplasty removes excess skin, muscle, and fat and repositions the corner of the eye. In some cases, the entire lower eyelid may be replaced. Other related procedures include lateral tarsal strip eyelid repositioning, fat sliding procedures and resolving the tear trough through ablation. Upper eyelid surgery is performed to remove excess fat deposits that appear make the eyelids look puffy.

Your eyes and eyelids greatly affect your facial appearance. Puffy and tired looking eyes can make you look older. Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the area around the eyes and makes you look more alert and rested. The rising popularity of double eyelid cosmetic procedures is fueled by the fad among Asians to look Westernized and boost confidence. Double eyelid or upper blepharoplasty is performed to create eyelid folds using various types of incision methods. In one case, a young Korean girl went under the knife to make her eyes look bigger because she and her mother thought that looking pretty would help her “get ahead”.

Technological advancements have improved the safety and efficiency of eyelid surgery procedures. There is an increasingly positive outlook towards plastic surgery procedures performed for aesthetic reasons. Given all these factors, it would not be surprising if the demand for blepharoplasty continues to rise. Of course, it’s crucial that the procedure is performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with vast experience to ensure optimal results.
